Jason shook his head.
“That’s insane.”
Mr.
Hayes looked at him.
“Would you like me to continue?”
Jason said nothing.
So the attorney did.
“She discovered that Jason had been transferring money from our joint accounts.”
A few people exchanged shocked looks.
“She also discovered that he had been purchasing property under another person’s name.”
Jason’s breathing became heavier.
“And she discovered something else.”
Mr.
Hayes paused.
I could hear the clock on the church wall.
“She discovered that Rachel was not simply Jason’s coworker.”
Rachel stood abruptly.
“I didn’t know he was married when we met.”
Jason turned toward her.
“Rachel—”
“You told me you were getting divorced.”
The church became completely silent.
Jason looked stunned.
“You said Lily had agreed to it.”
“I never said that.”
“You did.”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“You told me she was sick and that the marriage was already over.”
