“Lily requested that her will be opened and read today.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Jason stood.
“You’re joking.”
“No.”
“Who authorized this?”
“Your wife did.”
Jason looked toward my mother.
Then my father.
Then me.
“Emily,” he said sharply.
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
He looked suspicious.
Mr.
Hayes calmly continued.
“There is also a section Lily specifically requested be read aloud at her funeral.”
The room became completely silent.
Jason slowly sat down.
Rachel’s hand slipped from his arm.
Mr.
Hayes unfolded a document.
Then he began.
“If you are hearing these words, Jason, then the one thing I prayed would never happen has happened.”
Jason’s face went pale.
Mr.
Hayes continued.
“I am no longer here to protect myself from you.”
My heart stopped.
My mother covered her mouth.
Jason stared at the attorney.
“Stop.”
Mr.
