Chapter 1: The night before my wedding, I overheard my bridesmaids through the hotel wall: h6368

Ethan pulled me close.

“We’re leaving the reception for a few minutes,” he whispered. “You need air.”

I nodded.

We stepped outside onto the terrace overlooking the harbor. The afternoon sun was beginning to lower, and the wind carried the smell of salt and flowers.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Ethan said, “I should have told you everything the first time she confessed.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I could manage it without hurting you.”

“You thought silence would protect us.”

He looked down.

“I was wrong.”

I took his hand.

“So was I. I let her manage things because I didn’t want to seem controlling. I ignored comments that made me uncomfortable because I didn’t want to be the jealous friend.”

“We can’t change that.”

“No. But we can stop doing it.”

He nodded.

“I want our marriage to begin with the truth. Even when it’s difficult.”

“Then that’s what we’ll do.”
