“I never said that.”
“I know that now.”
“What happened?”
“She asked me to meet her at a coffee shop. She said she was worried about you. I went because I thought she was trying to help.”
“And?”
“She told me she had feelings for me.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“What did you say?”
“I told her I loved you and that nothing was going to happen between us. She cried. She said she understood.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she promised she wouldn’t bring it up again, and I didn’t want to create unnecessary drama between you and your best friend. I thought I could handle it.”
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
I wasn’t angry because Ethan had encouraged Vanessa. According to him, he had rejected her. I was angry because both of us had allowed her to become the messenger between us, and she had used that position to distort what we believed about each other.
