I stopped feeling angry.
I was simply exhausted.
For the first time in 35 years of living together, I began to wonder whether my husband truly knew me at all.
If he could believe a single preliminary test result after all those years without even trying to hear me out, what did our relationship really mean to him?
On Sunday morning, I called my younger sister, Susan.
“Could I stay with you for a while?” I asked.
She didn’t hesitate for a moment.
“Of course. What happened?”
I told her everything: the test results, Robert’s accusations, and how he had told our children that I was the one who had destroyed our family.
Susan listened without interrupting.
Then she said something I would never forget:
“Margaret, being married for 35 years doesn’t mean you have to put up with humiliation. You deserve at least to have someone listen to you.”
