She made me tea, listened as I shared my feelings, and reminded me that I didn’t have to decide the future of my marriage in a single day.
Throughout that time, Robert kept sending me messages.
At first, he simply apologized. Later, he began seeing a psychotherapist to learn how to cope with fear and stop taking his own anxiety out on the people closest to him.
He didn’t demand that I come home immediately.
He didn’t blame me for being too emotional in my response.
He continued apologizing and tried to show through his actions that he understood just how deeply he had hurt me.
After a few weeks, he wrote:
“I don’t expect you to forget what happened. I just want you to know that I now understand I should have spoken to you first, listened to you, and waited for the doctor’s opinion. I let you down at the very moment you needed my trust the most.”
