She thought nobody would stand up for him.
She was almost right.
For twenty-eight years, I was the person who didn’t stand up.
But my daughter has a gap in her front teeth and freckles on her nose and absolutely no fear of grown women in white puffer vests.
She saw what happened.
She pulled on my sleeve.
She whispered in my ear.
And then she walked up to a crying young man in a green polo shirt and said Hi, I’m Zoe.
And she said his name.
That’s all it took.
That’s all it ever takes.
Somebody who saw.
Somebody who says it out loud.
Somebody who reads the name on the shirt.
His name is Henry.
He’s a stock lead at Lakeview Foods on Woodland Avenue in Duluth.
He has a gold medal in the long jump.
Every label in his aisles faces out.
