A Rude Customer Screamed at a Young Employee With Down Syndrome, but She Soon Regretted Asking for the Manager

Terrence looked at him for a long time.

“Okay,” he said. “Gloria and Jade will clean up the glass. You go get a new case from the back. I’ll hold the ladder.”

Henry nodded.

He handed Zoe’s Lucky Charms to Gloria. “Hold these, please. They’re mine.”

He went to the back.

He came out five minutes later.

Pushing a new stock cart. A new case of Ocean Spray. Cranberry. The big glass bottles.

He parked the cart by the shelf.

He set the brake.

He checked it. Pushed on it. Made sure it held.

He looked at Terrence.

“Hold the ladder?” he said.

“I’ve got you,” Terrence said.

Henry climbed up.

He took a bottle out of the case.

He reached up. He put it on the top shelf. He turned it so the label faced out.

He took another bottle.

Zoe and I watched him do all twelve.
