Terrence closed his eyes.
“She waited until his back was turned,” he said.
“Why Henry?” Zoe said.
Everybody looked at her.
She was standing next to me. Still holding the Lucky Charms.
“Why’d she pick Henry?” Zoe said. “Out of everybody?”
Terrence didn’t answer right away.
He looked at Jade. Jade looked at the floor.
Then Terrence looked at Zoe.
“Because she thought he wouldn’t be able to defend himself,” he said. “She thought he’d just stand there and say sorry. She thought nobody would believe him if he said it wasn’t him.”
He swallowed.
“She picked him because she thought he was the easiest target in the store,” he said.
Zoe’s face went red.
Bright red. Up to her ears. The way her father’s does when he’s about to lose his temper on the boat.
“That’s not fair,” she said.
