A Rude Customer Screamed at a Young Employee With Down Syndrome, but She Soon Regretted Asking for the Manager

Henry jumped. He grabbed the shelf to keep from falling off the ladder.

The woman grabbed her phone off the apple juice.

She turned it around. She held it up in front of her face.

Her mouth was moving. Big. Animated.

She was smiling.

For about two seconds, before she turned back to Henry, she was smiling into the camera.

Jade sat back in her chair.

“Oh, hell no,” she said.

Terrence didn’t say anything.

He was standing behind Jade’s chair with both hands on the back of it. Gripping so hard his knuckles were white.

He watched the whole thing again.

Then a third time.

Then he looked at Zoe.

“You saw that,” he said quietly. “Through the end cap.”

Zoe nodded.

“You were right,” he said. “Every single thing. Exactly the way you said.”

Zoe started crying.

Not sad crying. I don’t know what kind. Relief, maybe.
