While she went down to the car, Jamie leaned toward me.
“I like her.”
“Good.”
“You should marry her.”
“I like her.”
“We’ve been dating three months.”
“You’re slow.”
I married her eleven months later. For a while, the three of us were happy. Then something happened, and Claire started looking at my brother differently.
I called it an accident. Claire said she forgave him.
I wanted to believe that.
I called it an accident.
But she got tense when he was near. She watched his hands. She started taking things from him, a bag, a dish, a glass.
“I’ll do it.”
Jamie noticed. He never said a word.
Claire had never gone easy on him. She expected him to do things right, same as anyone. I used to think that was respect.
Then she got pregnant, and the expectation turned into fear.
