Claire did neither.
She asked about the garden center. When Jamie said his manager was an idiot, she asked why. When he told her a joke, she laughed, then said it was bad.

“It’s a good joke,” Jamie said.
“It’s a terrible joke. Tell me another one.”
He grinned like he’d won something.
Then she tasted his soup.
“Needs salt.”
I nearly choked.
“You like her?”
Jamie stared at her. “Get out of my house.”
“It’s your apartment,” Claire said, and took another spoonful.
He laughed so hard he had to sit down.
She never gave him a discount. If he said he’d do something, she expected it done. I loved that about her. But I didn’t know that this would play a cruel trick on all of us.
