A man kept manspreading into my plane seat for hours—when he returned from the restroom, he shouted, “What the hell did you do?!”

And I said, quite loudly: “Don’t reach over me.”

And a woman two rows up pressed her call bell.

And the cabin manager came, who is called Kemi and who is about forty and who was extremely good, and she stood in that aisle and listened to him for about ninety seconds without interrupting and then listened to me for about forty.

And then she said the sentence that ended it, which was: “Sir, I’m going to ask you to take your seat and keep your belongings within it.”

And he sat down. With his jacket on his lap.

And eleven minutes later Kemi came back and leaned down and asked whether I would like to move, because there was a spare pair up at the front of the cabin.

And I said yes please.

And I got my bag and my book and my shoes and I went and sat in 4C with my hip out straight for the last four and a half hours of that flight, and a steward brought me a gin and tonic that I had not ordered and did not pay for.
