A man kept manspreading into my plane seat for hours—when he returned from the restroom, he shouted, “What the hell did you do?!”

I put the armrest down, which he had had up since the stand.

I took his jacket off the divider, folded it, and put it on his seat.

I put my handbag on his seat next to it, and my book flat, and my water on his tray table, which I pulled down.

And I took my shoes off and put both feet into his footwell.

And then I sat back.

Fifty seconds, maybe. The woman in front has since told me it was less.

And he came back from that toilet and there was no seat.

What happened in the next eleven minutes.

He shouted. Twice.

And then he reached across me for his jacket, which is the moment it stopped being about a seat, because there were four people watching by then and a man of about fifty leaned over a woman of sixty-one and took hold of something.
