“Needing my tray table isn’t much of a problem.”
“Then stop acting like it is.”
I nearly answered.
Instead, I thanked the flight attendant and held the cup until Josh finally moved his arm.
That was the kind of thing Steven used to tease me about.
I had always apologized too quickly.
Once, at a grocery store, I accidentally bumped into an abandoned shopping cart.
“Sorry,” I said automatically.
Steven looked at me.
“Celeste, sweetheart, the cart doesn’t have feelings.”
“I might have startled it.”
He spent the rest of the shopping trip apologizing to shelves.
“Excuse me, canned tomatoes.”
“So sorry, breakfast cereal.”
“Pardon us, frozen peas.”
I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.
Thinking about him on the plane made me smile.
Then Josh stretched his leg into mine again.
I checked the flight time.
We weren’t even halfway there.
A little later, the flight attendant returned collecting cups.
