I entered the room, and both of them looked at me.
Mariam smiled immediately.
“Sister-in-law, you’re back? We were just talking about you.”
I said, “I heard.”
Her smile disappeared for a second, but she quickly recovered.
“Ah, please don’t misunderstand me. I’m only concerned about my brother.”
I didn’t answer her.
A few days later, Ahmed came home and asked me why I was making his sister uncomfortable.
I was confused.
“What did I do?”
He said Mariam told him I complained about her staying in our house and that I had been treating her like a burden.
I looked at him and asked, “Ahmed, have you ever heard me say that?”
He said he didn’t want to get involved in an argument between us.
Can you imagine?
His sister had accused me of something, and somehow, I was the one who needed to explain myself.
I called Mariam downstairs and asked her directly.
