First repayment.
I looked up.
“Ethan…”
“I know I’ll never repay everything.”
“I wasn’t expecting you to.”
“I’m not doing it because I owe the money.”
He smiled.
“I’m doing it because I owe the effort.”
The sentence nearly brought tears to my eyes.
For the first time since I met him, he fully understood the difference between receiving and earning.
“I’ll accept it,” I said.
“You will?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because refusing it would take away your chance to become the man you’re trying to be.”
He nodded quietly.
“I hoped you’d say that.”
Before leaving, he stopped at the door.
“I loved you, Victoria.”
“I know.”
“I think I spent too many years loving what you gave instead of appreciating who you were.”
I smiled gently.
“I know that too.”
He walked away.
I watched him disappear down the hallway.
Oddly, I did not feel sadness.
