He accepted the call.
“Daniel Brooks.”
Her voice burst through the room.
“Where’s Victoria?”
“I’m here.”
There was a brief silence.
Then she spoke directly to me.
“What are you doing?”
“Reviewing my finances.”
“You’ve embarrassed this family.”
I almost smiled at the irony.
“Really?”
“You stopped the closing.”
“Yes.”
“My furniture is already there.”
“I know.”
“The movers are waiting.”
“I know.”
“My neighbors are expecting us.”
“I understand.”
“You need to fix this immediately.”
“No.”
Silence.
The kind of silence that arrives when someone hears the word no for the first time.
Finally, she asked, “What do you mean, no?”
“I mean the purchase has been suspended.”
“You promised me that house.”
“I never promised you anything.”
“Ethan did.”
I glanced toward my husband.
He lowered his head.
“You paid for it,” Eleanor said.
“I considered it a gift.”
“And now you’re taking it away?”
