Megan entered my office.
“Are you ready?”
I looked at the clock. It was almost four.
“Yes.”
She returned a few minutes later.
“Ethan is in the private conference room.”
I took one slow breath before entering.
He stood beside the window with both hands in his pockets. His tie was loose, and his eyes were red from exhaustion.
For the first time in years, he did not look like the confident Bennett everyone admired.
He looked like a man who had just discovered his life was not what he thought it was.
When he turned toward me, I barely recognized him.
“You look tired,” I said.
“I didn’t sleep.”
“I did.”
He gave a weak smile.
“I guess one of us had to.”
Neither of us sat immediately.
Finally, he spoke.
“I need you to explain what’s happening.”
“I already did.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I mean everything.”
