Underwear Marks and Skin Health — What Clothing Patterns May Reveal

Walking, exercising, sitting for long periods, and normal daily activities can increase friction between clothing and the body. Seams, lace, rough materials, and poorly positioned elastic may make the problem more noticeable.

Friction can produce redness, tenderness, burning, or irritation. In some cases, repeated rubbing can damage the skin’s protective barrier.

People who frequently experience this problem may benefit from softer fabrics, better-fitting garments, and clothing designed to reduce unnecessary rubbing.

Moisture and Heat Can Change the Skin’s Response

Sweat can make clothing-related irritation more likely.

Warm, moist areas can experience increased friction because damp fabric stays against the skin. Prolonged moisture can also make irritated skin feel uncomfortable and may contribute to certain skin problems.

Changing out of damp clothing after exercise and keeping skin folds reasonably dry can be helpful. Breathable fabrics may also improve comfort, particularly during hot weather.

This does not mean that every mark associated with moisture indicates an infection. Temporary redness or indentation can occur simply because the skin has been exposed to heat, sweat, and friction.
