She called for help.
And other people responded.
I will never know precisely what would have happened if Lily and Emma had continued down the path that morning. I will not claim that their actions alone saved me. The bystander who contacted emergency services, the paramedics, and the hospital team all played essential roles in my recovery.
But the girls helped bring attention to my situation, and that mattered.
It mattered because a person in distress may be unable to ask for assistance. It mattered because hesitation can delay a response. And it mattered because even someone small can help others recognize that something is wrong.
My fortune did not make me invulnerable. My name did not guarantee that someone would notice me.
People helped me.
Two of them were five-year-old girls wearing worn shoes, carrying a pink backpack, and remembering a lesson their grandmother had taught them.
When somebody needs help, you do what you safely can. You find the right person, call the appropriate services, and allow those equipped to help to take over.
