The Needle Cap – 1

He turned back. “Swallowed?”

I opened my mouth and lifted my tongue. Let him see nothing but water.

He watched me for two seconds. Then he went for his coffee. I reached for my glass and my elbow hit his cup. Ceramic hit tile.

“Sorry.” I stood up. My voice shook on it.

Daniel bent to grab the rim without thinking. A shard opened the palm of his right hand. Blood came up fast out of the web of his thumb, dripping onto the white tile.

What crossed his face wasn’t worry. It was the annoyance of a machine that just jammed.

“Sit down,” he said.

Nora looked back from the doorway. Daniel shifted his body to block her line of sight. She stood there a second, then pulled the door open and left.

He pressed a towel to his hand and dug out a Band-Aid. The bleeding didn’t stop right away. I watched the cut and memorized the shape of it.
