The Needle Cap – 1

“How long have you been awake, Avery?”

His fingers reached for my eyelid. His fingertips barely touched my lashes and my stomach moved first.

I grabbed the edge of the bed and heaved. First one was just acid. The second one landed on his wrist.

The smell hit me and I didn’t have to fake a thing. The tears came on their own.

Daniel swore and jerked back. I pulled my knees up, buried my face in the pillow, made muffled crying noises.

He turned on the light.

White light straight in my eyes, everything blown out. He looked at my face first. Then my left arm. I’d already pulled the sleeve down, but his hand stopped just above the cuff.

“I think I took the wrong dose.” My throat felt sanded raw. “Those two pills before bed. Did I double up?”

He got hold of my chin and tilted my face up. The light made my pupils ache.
