The « mysterious » object in the picture: a charcoal iron

Long before modern electric irons, the charcoal iron offered a clever solution to one of the most time-consuming household chores: ironing clothes. Using glowing charcoal as a heat source, this ingenious device allowed people to keep their clothes smooth and crisp for longer without having to constantly return to the stove.

Distinctive Features of Charcoal Irons

  1. Hollow Chamber for Charcoal
The iron had a hollow interior designed to hold glowing charcoal. This built-in heat source helped maintain the temperature of the soleplate for longer than traditional solid irons, reducing the need for frequent reheating.

  2. Hinged lid with decorative latch
The latch, often in the shape of a rooster, bird or floral motif, was both decorative and functional. By opening the hinged lid, fresh charcoal could be added or ashes removed without having to replace the entire iron.

Fun fact: The rooster, a traditional symbol of vigilance and domestic order, was a popular decorative motif on some household items, including certain antique irons.
