Nigel Quashie on X: “This is K9 Valor. He saved 47 soldiers …
Then the Explosion Came
The soldiers reacted as quickly as they could.
Some moved away from the immediate area.
Others prepared themselves for the attack.
Then the explosion tore through the position.
The calm of the morning disappeared instantly beneath noise, smoke and flying debris.
The blast struck with tremendous force.
Men were thrown off balance.
Dust filled the air.
For several terrifying seconds, nobody could fully understand what had happened.
But the dog who had first detected the threat had been caught in the explosion.
He was badly wounded.
The injuries would later be described as devastating.
His left eye was destroyed.
One ear suffered severe damage.
His jaw was shattered.
For almost any animal, injuries of that severity would have been enough to end the story.
But the attack was not over.
And somehow, neither was the dog.
