I opened the back door one more time.
Ruby was standing in the middle of the shed.
Paintbrush still in her hand.
Eyes huge.
“Is it him?” she whispered.
I knelt in front of her.
My knees sank into the dirt floor.
“Listen to me,” I said.
“Stay with Daddy.”
“Whatever you hear, you stay with Daddy.”
“Where are you going?”
“Right outside.”
“I’m going to stand in front of the door.”
“That’s my job.”
“It was always my job.”
She grabbed my robe with her good hand.
“Mom.”
“Keep humming, baby,” I said.
“If you hum, I’ll know you’re okay.”
Then I stood up.
And I went back out.
“Jason,” I said.
“Go inside.”
“Be with her.”
“If he gets past me, you’re the last door.”
Jason stared at me.
Then he did the hardest thing I’ve ever watched him do.
He listened.
He went inside.
Meredith went with him.
