The Down Payment – 1

Jake came upstairs behind me and stopped in the bedroom doorway. “What are you doing?”

“I’m not threatening you.” My hands weren’t steady as I shoved T-shirts in. “I just don’t want to wake up and have my first thought be which door she’s coming through today, and what she’s taking this time.”

He stepped toward me like he was going to hug me, then stopped halfway. “Are you really going to make me choose between you and my mom?”

My hand froze on the zipper. He didn’t hear what he’d just said. That question was already an answer. He still wasn’t picking me. I zipped the bag and carried it past him.

Diane was coming up the stairs with a fruit tray. She saw my suitcase and her eyes lit up — that kind of light she couldn’t hide even if she tried.

“Need a hand?” She reached for the strap.
