The second document was a more recent legal instrument.
I could not understand every paragraph, but I recognized the words darowizna, własność, and księga wieczysta.
Gift.
Ownership.
Land register.
The documents appeared to show that Stanisław had arranged a separate transfer of the property before his death.
But had that transfer been completed correctly?
I did not know enough to be certain.
Then I found a handwritten account of the family’s finances.
Stanisław had recorded payments for repairs, taxes, and maintenance. Beside several entries, he had written the names of his sons.
Some payments had been made by Andrzej.
Others by Mirosław.
But next to the largest group of entries, spanning seven years, he had written my name.
Not because I had received money.
Because he had recorded the value of the work I had done for him, the household expenses I had covered, and the income I had lost when I left the embroidery workshop.
