PArt 2: My older brother drove down to help me move, but he arrived at my martial arts gym just in time to watch a 210-pound black belt deliberately choke me unconscious t1

“Oh, give me a break.”

Cole turned toward him slowly.

That was the first moment all night I became genuinely afraid for Derek.

My brother’s expression didn’t look angry.

It looked empty.

Cold.

Controlled.

The same expression I had seen once before when Cole received a phone call overseas and learned one of his teammates had been killed.

He took one step toward Derek.

Derek lifted his chin.

“What?”

Cole stopped.

Then, unexpectedly, he stepped away.

“Sarah.”

“Yes?”

“Call the police.”

Mark immediately raised both hands.

“Whoa. Nobody needs police.”

Melissa already had her phone out.

“I do.”

Mark moved toward her.

Cole blocked him without even looking.

“Don’t.”

Mark froze.

Derek laughed again.

“You think cops care about a training accident?”

Cole looked at the folders.

“One accident?”

Derek’s smile disappeared.

Sirens arrived eleven minutes later.

Those eleven minutes felt longer than the entire evening.

trained.

Nobody spoke much.

People sat around the mat checking their phones and whispering.

Derek remained near the far wall, occasionally muttering to Mark.

Cole stayed beside me.

When the officers entered, Derek immediately became charming.

Calm.

Professional.

He explained that martial arts carried inherent risks.

He explained that I had failed to tap clearly.

He explained that my brother, an aggressive stranger, had entered the gym and escalated the situation.

Then one officer asked whether the gym had security cameras.

Mark stopped breathing.

I looked up.

There were cameras in the corners.

I had never thought about them.

The officer pointed.

“Those record?”

Mark hesitated.

Derek answered.

“No.”

Anthony laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“They record.”

Derek glared.

Anthony continued.

“I installed them.”

The officer’s expression sharpened.

“Where is the footage stored?”

Mark said nothing.

Cole looked toward the office computer.

The officers separated everyone.

Statements were taken.

Names

were written down.

The footage was reviewed.

And then the entire story Derek had spent years constructing collapsed in less than five minutes.

The camera clearly showed me tapping.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

It showed Derek looking directly at my hand.

It showed him tightening the choke afterward.

It showed me go limp.
