Nineteen Thousand Dollars, a Forged Signature, and a Flight to the Dominican Republic

Someone blew a loud plastic whistle.A crowd cheered and shouted over the music.

“What,” Derek said.

He’d sighed loudly before answering.

He did it every time we talked about schedules, grocery bills, or money.

It was his way of letting me know my very existence was a drain on his time.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Do you always have to check up on me?” Derek said.

“I’m busy.”His voice slurred badly on the last word.

The club music switched to a fast steel drum rhythm.

I could hear wind hitting the microphone on his phone.

“It’s nineteen hundred hours,” I said.

“I’m asking you for your exact location.”

“You smother me,” Derek said.

“You leave for a six-month deployment and then you call and demand a report like I’m one of your logistics recruits.

I have a life too.”
