Paisley lifted one hand.
She drew an invisible rectangle in the air.
“Here.”
Then she yawned.
“Daddy said don’t tell.”
My blood went cold.
“Daddy said that?”
She nodded.
“Before birthday.”
I sat very still.
Trevor had never told Paisley to keep secrets from me.
Never.
I walked downstairs.
Trevor was sitting on the couch.
He looked up.
“Everything okay?”
I stared at him.
“Did you tell Paisley not to tell me something?”
His expression changed.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course.”
“What did you say to her before the party?”
“Nothing unusual.”
I watched him carefully.
“Then why did she say you told her not to tell?”
He stood.
“What exactly did she say?”
I repeated it.
Trevor’s face became pale.
Then he whispered:
“I need to tell you something.”
I felt the room tilt.
“What?”
He looked toward the windows.
“Your father called me three weeks ago.”
