There was nothing unusual.
No blood.
No wound.
No pregnancy.
Nothing.
Then Paisley suddenly pointed at the small black bag beside Rosalyn’s chair.
“That’s where Daddy is!”
Everyone looked.
The bag was ordinary.
Black leather.
Small enough to fit under an arm.
Rosalyn immediately stepped between us and it.
“No.”
Her voice was different.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
Trevor noticed it too.
“Rosalyn?”
She picked up the bag.
“I’m leaving.”
My father frowned.
“You just got here.”
“I don’t feel well.”
She turned.
Paisley began screaming again.
“DON’T TAKE DADDY!”
Rosalyn froze.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Trevor walked toward her.
“What is in the bag?”
“Personal things.”
“Why is Paisley scared of it?”
“She is three.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Rosalyn stared at him.
Then she looked at me.
For one strange second, I saw something in her eyes that I had never seen before.
