Rosalyn nodded.
“That’s because the woman you believed was your mother wasn’t your biological mother.”
I stared at her.
Nothing made sense.
Rosalyn continued.
“Your real mother died when you were six.”
I felt something crack inside me.
“No.”
“She was killed in a car accident.”
“No.”
“Your father couldn’t accept it.”
“No.”
“He took you and Elena.”
“No.”
“He raised you both under a false identity.”
“No.”
“And when Elena became sick, he did something unforgivable.”
I whispered:
“What?”
Rosalyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“He let everyone believe she was dead.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because Elena knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That you weren’t the original Emily.”
I froze.
Rosalyn stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t have twins.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“He had one biological daughter.”
Me.
“And one adopted child.”
Elena.
“But why did she look like me?”
Rosalyn shook her head.
