My thirteen-year-old son spent Christmas Eve alone in my brother’s garage, eating a cold turkey sandwich while thirty-five people celebrated inside.

My mother closed her eyes.

I took a step closer.

« You knew. »

« I didn’t know she’d put him in the garage. »

But he couldn’t look at me.

I had known my brother my entire life.

I knew what his face looked like when he was lying.

And right then, I knew he wasn’t telling me everything.

I left the dining room.

When I opened the garage door, Ethan was still in the folding chair.

He looked up anxiously.

« Are they mad? »

I swallowed.

« Come on, buddy. We’re going home. »

He stood immediately.
