The dining hall was filled with people enjoying a warm Christmas meal.
Around noon, a young woman approached my counter carrying a toddler.
She looked at my name tag.
“Are you Joanne?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
She smiled.
“My name is Kayla. Last year, your donation helped my son and me stay in our apartment.”
I stared at her.
“Really?”
She nodded.
“We were behind on rent. Westdale helped us get caught up. I’ve wanted to thank you ever since.”
I looked at the little boy in her arms.
He waved at me while holding a dinner roll.
Tears filled my eyes.
“I’m so glad you’re doing well.”
After Kayla walked away, Lily looked up at me.
“Grandma, was that Grandpa’s money?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
She considered that for a moment.
Then she smiled.
“I think Grandpa would like that better than keeping all those hockey things.”
I laughed softly.
