It was becoming a little short.
The sleeves were tighter than they used to be.
But she had refused to replace it.
She stood in front of me and twirled.
“Daddy, do I still look like a princess?”
I knelt beside her.
“You always will.”
She smiled.
Then she took the little silver crown from her pocket and pressed it into my hand.
“Mommy said I don’t need a crown.”
I nodded.
“That’s right.”
She placed it on Grandma’s head.
“Then Grandma can wear it today.”
Grandma burst out laughing.
And as I watched them together, I realized that the little girl my family had dismissed as having no future had already received something far more important than a fortune.
She knew she was loved.
But the final surprise came that evening, after the guests had gone.
Lily brought me a folded piece of paper.
“Daddy, I made something for you.”
