“Yes.”
Grandma opened another document.
“When Nora died, Lily became the beneficiary of that trust. The shares have been held and professionally managed on her behalf.”
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Lily already owns fifty-one percent of your company?”
Grandma nodded.
“And tonight, I’ve transferred my remaining forty-nine percent into a separate trust for her.”
I looked at the cream-colored envelope.
The documents.
The signatures.
The enormous figures printed across the pages.
Grandma had not simply announced that my daughter would inherit her fortune someday.
She had already completed the transfer.
My six-year-old daughter now held the entire company through two protected trusts.
Vanessa made a strange surprised sound.
My father sat perfectly still.
Then he reached for the papers.
Grandma placed her hand over them.
“No, Richard.”
His expression changed.
“Mother, this makes no sense! The child can’t possibly understand what she’s been given!”
