Vanessa noticed.
Her expression twisted with sudden fury.
“Oh, my God. I get it,” Vanessa sneered, her voice rising to a frantic, hysterical pitch. “Emma filled your head with lies! She tried this at her old job, Daniel! She destroyed her own career because she’s paranoid and jealous, and now she’s trying to destroy mine! She doctored documents! She’s insane! You can’t believe a word she says!”
Mercer stepped slightly in front of me.
“Then let’s talk about her old job,” Mercer countered. “Because from where I stand, Emma’s old job taught her exactly how to catch liars. And she is very, very good at it.”
My father grabbed my elbow.
His fingers dug painfully into my skin.
“Apologize to your sister, Emma,” he hissed, spittle flying from his pale lips. “Fix this. Tell him you made a mistake. Tell him you lied. Now!”
