My nine-year-old daughter was about to step off her school bus when the silver-haired driver suddenly stood up and called out, “Please stay back! I need to keep her safe!”

Investigators had found the silver pickup and confirmed the driver’s identity.

The individual had no family relationship with Ellie.

His name wasn’t included among her authorized emergency contacts.

And I’d never given him permission to collect my daughter.

Authorities were continuing their investigation into his attempt to approach her.

Deputy Reed couldn’t disclose every detail.

I understood his position.

For the moment, Ellie was safe, and the school had introduced additional precautions around student pickup and drop-off locations.

While the investigation remained ongoing, I had to find reassurance in those measures.

At 7:26 on Friday morning, Route 24 arrived at our corner.

The folding doors swung open.

Frank was sitting behind the steering wheel.

“Good morning, Ellie.”

“Good morning, Mr. Lawson.”

He gestured toward the first row.

“Kept a seat ready for you.”

Ellie stepped onto the bus.

Then she looked back toward me.

“Bye, Mom!”

“Have a wonderful day, sweetheart.”
