My nine-year-old daughter was about to step off her school bus when the silver-haired driver suddenly stood up and called out, “Please stay back! I need to keep her safe!”

“That’s when he called our department.”

I studied the motionless picture.

Frank was holding the radio microphone.

Ellie remained safely seated inside the bus.

“What instructions did you give him?”

“We advised him to proceed toward the next safe location while we checked the information. Once he reported that the vehicle might be following, we instructed him not to release Ellie if that individual appeared again.”

I nodded slowly.

Mrs. Shaw resumed the video.

The camera showed the bus traveling along streets I recognized.

At one intersection, a silver pickup appeared several vehicles behind it.

The recording couldn’t establish who was behind the wheel.

But the same-looking truck appeared at the following turn.

Afterward, it disappeared from view.

I moved closer to the screen.

“Is that the man’s pickup?”

“It matches the vehicle Mr. Lawson described,” Deputy Reed answered.

The recording continued toward Briar Street.

My own street. My familiar corner.
