I closed my eyes.
“There’s more,” Denise said. “There’s a statement from Vanessa in the file. About how she found out. You want me to read it?”
“Yes.”
Denise read it.
I came home early from a sales trip. Kristen’s car was in my driveway. They were in our kitchen. When I confronted Mark, he said, “You know how it is, Van. Men get bored after that many years. You should have seen it coming.”
I sat very still.
Men get bored after that many years.
You should have seen it coming.
Vanessa hadn’t said those words to me because she believed them.
She’d said them because someone said them to her.
The invitation came three days later.
It was a card. Cream-colored, with little blue flowers around the edge. It was in our mailbox, addressed only to Irvin Morrison. Not to Irvin and Janet. Not to the Morrisons. Just Irvin.
