My husband wanted a divorce. He told me, “I want the house, the cars, everything, except our son.” My attorney urged me to fight for my rights, but I simply replied, “Let him have it all.” Everyone believed I had gone completely crazy.

My close friends called me repeatedly to tell me I was acting recklessly. My younger sister, Amy, cried on the phone for an hour trying to convince me to change my mind. Even Sarah continued to express her deep concern right up until the final court appearance.

She pulled me into a private room just outside the courtroom doors on the morning of our hearing.

“Laura, this is your absolute last chance to reverse course,” Sarah warned me. “If you have a legitimate reason for doing this, it needs to be a remarkably good one.”

I looked directly into her eyes with total confidence.

“Trust me, Sarah, it is a very good reason,” I assured her.

She took a deep breath and decided not to push the issue any further.

The courtroom was far quieter than I had anticipated when we walked inside. The judge sat at the bench and slowly reviewed every page of the divorce agreement. Page after page went by in complete silence. The paperwork was overwhelmingly favorable toward Mark, listing the real estate, the vehicles, and the bank funds under his name.
