My husband wanted a divorce. He told me, “I want the house, the cars, everything, except our son.” My attorney urged me to fight for my rights, but I simply replied, “Let him have it all.” Everyone believed I had gone completely crazy.

“That is my answer for now,” I replied softly, keeping my face completely blank.

A week later, I was sitting across from my legal representative, Sarah Miller, inside her office in downtown Minneapolis. I repeated every single demand Mark had made at the counter.

Sarah put her pen down on her pad and stared at me in disbelief.

“Laura, this entire proposal is completely absurd,” Sarah said firmly. “You cannot possibly agree to these conditions.”

“I am well aware of how absurd it sounds,” I replied.

“You brought substantial income into this household throughout your marriage,” Sarah continued, leaning across her desk. “You are legally entitled to your full equitable share of every asset.”

“I know that,” I said calmly.

“Furthermore, custody is not a bargaining chip he can toss aside,” she insisted. “Tommy is your child, not an unwanted piece of furniture.”

“I know,” I repeated.

Sarah leaned in closer and tapped her desk with her finger.
