Two weeks later, we met inside a conference room for a second round of negotiations. Mark was facing a set of difficult choices. He could attempt to refinance the house and pay off my equity claim, or he could sell the house and divide the remaining proceeds according to our actual financial contributions.
Alternatively, he could agree to let me keep the house while he took both vehicles and the liquid bank savings.
I proposed the third option directly.
“You can take both cars and the forty-two thousand in savings,” I told him across the table. “I will take full ownership of the house and assume the remaining mortgage.”
“Why would you want this house after everything?” he asked, looking at me with a mixture of anger and confusion.
“I am not doing this to punish you,” I replied calmly. “Tommy is nine years old. His bedroom is here, his school is down the street, and his daily routine is stable. I want his life disrupted as little as possible.”
