My husband told me I was too poor to sit with his family at his cousin’s wedding… then a waiter walked over, called me “Ma’am,” and changed everything in front of the entire ballroom

People are talking.

Miles’s mother-in-law asked me at brunch whether it was true.

Can’t you just… let it go?

Come to Sunday dinner.

Let him apologize properly and we’ll put it behind us.”

“Blythe.

A long silence.

“That’s not — he’s your husband.”

“Why does that make it smaller?”

She didn’t have an answer.

Then she said the thing that ended it.

“You know what Mom said in the car on the way home?

“Careful.”

“Not sorry.

Careful.”

“Blythe,” I said.

“You’ve just explained your entire family in one word.

Thank you.
