My father answered. Listened. Then slowly lowered the phone. The color had disappeared from his face.
“Dad?”
He looked at me. And for the first time that day I saw genuine alarm in his eyes.
“Claire.”
My stomach tightened. “What happened?”
His voice dropped to a whisper. “The investigator just found out who Vanessa’s father is.”
A chill raced through the room. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved.
Finally I forced out the question. “Who?”
My father swallowed.
Then said a name that made every person in the room go pale.
Because Vanessa wasn’t just Eric’s mistress. She was the daughter of the billionaire businessman who had purchased Eric’s company three months earlier.
And according to the investigator, the billionaire had absolutely no idea his daughter was secretly involved with a married man.
The silence that followed those words was different from every silence that had come before it.

I looked at my father. “Does he know about the children?”
“The investigator doesn’t think so.” My father set his phone down carefully on the chair beside him, the same deliberate way he handled things when the situation required steadiness rather than speed. “From what we can gather, Vanessa has kept this entirely separate. She travels frequently, and her father believes those trips are for work.”
Megan sat very still in the corner. “Does Eric know who she is? Who her father is?”
My father’s expression shifted slightly. “That’s the interesting part.”
I waited.
“The acquisition three months ago was not coincidental,” he said. “Eric’s company had been struggling for over a year. He had been quietly looking for buyers, and the deal came together unusually fast. Faster than these things typically move.”
The understanding arrived slowly, like cold water rising.
“He knew,” I said.
My father nodded. “He appears to have known exactly who Vanessa was. The investigator believes Eric positioned the relationship to facilitate the sale. He introduced Vanessa’s father to the company through social channels, never disclosing the personal connection.”
