I simply smiled.
Because I had been waiting for dessert.
When the cake arrived, I stood up and placed a small sealed envelope beside every guest’s plate.
“One last birthday surprise,” I announced.
Mark grinned.
“Finally! Something special!”
He opened his envelope first.
His smile disappeared.Then his face turned bright red.
“HOW DARE YOU DO THIS IN FRONT OF EVERYONE?!” he screamed.
Claire opened hers.
And suddenly, she stopped smiling.

Mark stood so suddenly that his chair struck the wall.
“HOW DARE YOU HUMILIATE ME LIKE THIS?!”
His mother, Elaine, covered her mouth.
His sister, Rachel, stared at the papers in front of her.
And Claire sat completely motionless.
I rested one hand on my pregnant stomach.
“What’s wrong, Mark?” I asked calmly. “You wanted Claire to feel like family. I thought everyone deserved to know what kind of family you’ve been planning.”
Three weeks earlier, everything had changed.
I had been checking our shared email account for a receipt when I noticed a hotel reservation.
Two guests.
One room.
A romantic dinner package.
The reservation was under Mark’s name.
And the second guest was Claire.
At first, I couldn’t believe it.
Mark had told me he was attending a business conference.
I wanted to confront him immediately.
But then I discovered something even worse.
Mark had left his old tablet in our bedroom, and his messages were still synchronized.
I wasn’t prepared for what I read.
Claire had written:
“Are you sure she doesn’t suspect anything?”
Mark replied:
“She trusts me completely.”
Then another message appeared.
“Once the baby is born, I’ll find a way out. I just need everyone to believe the separation was her idea.”
I stared at those words for nearly an hour.
My husband wasn’t simply cheating.
He was planning to abandon our marriage while making me look responsible.
Then I found another message.
Claire had asked:
“Why did you marry her if you still wanted me?”
