My Husband Beat Me for Refusing to Live With My Mother in Law.

I learned that calm voices can say terrifying things.

That expensive homes can contain fear.

That a person can love you and still be unsafe.

That leaving does not require hatred.

That surviving someone does not mean every memory has to be poisoned before you are allowed to choose yourself.

And I learned something about that first morning too.

For a long time, I remembered Adrian placing the cosmetics bag on the counter.

The gold zipper catching sunlight.

His coffee steaming beside him.

His voice perfectly casual.

Cover that up and smile.

He believed the bruise was the problem because the bruise could be seen.

He never understood that by then, the invisible things had already become impossible for me to hide.

Years later, on quiet mornings in my little house outside Boston, sunlight would sometimes land across my bathroom counter.

It would touch the yellow canvas makeup bag.

The mirror.
