We called it the Open Door Fund.
I hated the name at first.
Then I understood it.
Leaving rarely happens in one brave moment.
Sometimes you need transportation.
A hotel.
A lawyer.
A new phone.
A deposit.
Childcare.
Someone to say, “Yes, what is happening counts.”
Someone to hold the door open long enough for you to walk through.
On the fund’s first anniversary, Rebecca brought me a small wrapped box.
“What?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a makeup bag.
For one second, my chest tightened.
Then I noticed it was cheap canvas.
Bright yellow.
Across the front, Caroline had embroidered three words.
NOT FOR HIDING.
I laughed so hard I cried.
We filled the bag with lipstick, sunscreen, hand cream and ridiculous glitter eye shadow.
I kept it in my bathroom.
Years later, that was the object I remembered most clearly.
Not Adrian’s expensive concealer.
Not the wedding ring.
