My Fiancé Left the Phone Line Open One Day Before Our Wedding, and I Heard Him Tell His Mother He Planned to Take My House, My Savings, and Then Get Rid of Me. So I Changed a Few Details About the Ceremony—and When the Final Wedding Gift Appeared on the Screen, Nathan Learned He Had Never Been the One Running the Con.

Not enough, by itself, to prove murder.

Then came the final discovery.

It happened seven months after my almost-wedding.

Agent Alvarez asked me to come to his office.

I brought Rebecca.

He placed a printed photograph on the table.

A man stood beside Nathan.

I recognized him immediately.

Martin Hall.

Nathan’s accountant.

Alvarez pushed another page toward me.

“A gas-station security camera captured Hall near the route your sister traveled the night before her death.”

My hands shook.

“What does that mean?”

“He purchased automotive tools.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“What kind?”

Alvarez answered.

“Brake-line equipment.”

The room disappeared.

I heard Melissa laughing.

I heard six-year-old Lily asking why Mommy would not wake up.

I heard Grace scream during the funeral.

My whole body started shaking.

Alvarez continued carefully.

“Hall has entered negotiations.”

“For what?”

“He is offering testimony.”

Rebecca whispered, “Against Nathan?”

“And Linda.”

I covered my mouth.

“What is he saying?”
